How long do the stock brake pads usually last?

There is no hard and fast rule on wear rates. I have been known to destroy a set of pads in a single afternoon - racing pads will usually go a whole day, however.

The oem pads have a noise maker rivited to the inside brake pad. It designed to squeal when its time to change the pads.
When inspecting pads dont just look at the outside pad, more often then not the inside pad wears out faster then the outside pad.

You can visually inspect the brake pads easily enough - taking a wheel off helps a lot of course. Just eyeball it, and if it shows about an 1/8th inch of pad left, you're pretty much at the point to replace them.
Alternatively, the noise could be from the pads' backing plates rubbing against these thin metal plates that attach to their backs. New pads come with a grease that goes in there and keeps things quiet. After 50k, it might not be doing much for you anymore...

I just replaced my front rotors at 51k miles yesterday (vibration/warped rotors). I replaced my front pads at the same time, and they still had probably 50% life left, if not more. I drive pretty aggressively, and have done numerous autox events on the original pads. I didn't even bother replacing the rear pads, b/c they looked almost brand new. We got some kickass brakes on these things .
