The article I (and apparently Tox) read said Honda and Porsche had agreed to share technology in the manner I described. It is certainly quite possible that they had a similar deal with Toyota.
Porsche did in fact license the Mitsubishi patented balance shafts for use in the 944 4-cylinder engine. They are not above using good technology just because they did not invent it.
When I refer to the "water cooled series" I am refering to the boxer flat 6 engines as used in the Boxster and 911 series cars as opposed to the classic air cooled version used in the previous generation 911 series cars.
