How high do you run the RPM ranges per gear in everyday driving?
I define everyday driving as:
* In town - lots of stop signs and lights
* Entering a freeway
* Long Freeway stretches(traffic and without)
* Mountain passes(if you have them)
I really babied my new silver/black 02 for the first 1000 miles(now 1300). Not exceeding 4500 rpm's to 600 miles and not exceeding 6000 rpm's to 1000 miles. Well, maybe 6500 rpm's once or twice after 800 miles.
I have driven a bmw for a while and feel that I know how to drive a german
engine ie long rpm ranges to the point the engine sounds like it wants to shift.
Yet, the S2000 tends to sound maxed even at 4-5K rpm';s ie in the lower gears
and so I can't get a good feel based on sound.
I know alot of you race, but I'am interested in what most people drive in every
day driving not necersarily what the engine can do at least for the moment.
Not talking about grandmothering, but something in between that and full
out track speeds ie when engine is relatively new.
thx

With this engine, it is quite easy to get around town, never exceeding 4000 rpms. At 4500, there is a weird resonance sound (I think it is the heat shield vibrating) that tends to make you want to upshift at that point. If you just keep the pedal down and accelerate past that, you will discover a new world where the engine is quite happy in the 6000+ range. It's kind of a "just get over it" situation. I use it when a.) I need it, or b.) I want to let off a little steam. That's usually about three times a day.

When I know there is a cop close by, I keep below 3500, don't draw attention to yourself. Pretend your just another MIATA Otherwise I drive by my butt-O-meter. If my plan is to speed shift, I'll keep one eye on the tach. A number of people tell me that I drive too aggressive and 3 friends won't even ride with me (when I drive the S2K). In my Accord, they're OKAY.
It takes time, turn off the CD player and listen and feel what the car is doing! And before you know it, you won't even give this question a second thought.

I've been playing with this one recently too.
When I drive the S2K I go low RPM (3k at shift) for the first 15 minutes, then go for more. I am a weekend driver for the car, so I can do more with it. In Phoenix during the week the freeways are bumper to bumper and the onramp lights drive me nuts. Where I live it takes 15 minutes just to get on the freeway and you drive at best 5 mph to the light, feathering the clutch is the only way I can do it. When I touch the gas the car wants to move forward too much. When I drove the car to work, it was easy does it (high of 45mph in 6th gear). Incredible gas mileage when you shift at low RPMS!
