with only 600 miles on the car you're not supposed to be in VTEC at all if you're following the break-in period correctly. Once the motor's broken in you're fine. high revs is what this car is made to do. of course if you can stay out of VTEC on acceleration you'll get a lot more miles per gallon

600 miles is the specific period mentioned in the MY06 owners manual. It also mentions 5500 rpms not 6000 IIRC. So time to VTEC.

BTW the 7000 rev limit may have been my second hit, I had just left work, and didn't think I was anywhere near 60mph, when hitting it in second.

I had vtec on staying at 8900 rpms just before the rev limiter for about 30 minutes on a freeway. (Reason was to burn off 1/4 tank to get into a car show, they required less than 1/4 tank). Car drove perfectly after that for another 15K miles without a flaw.
Unless vtec in the F20C/F22C operates differently than the B18C1, vtec won't stay on the entire time. If you're driving at a constant RPM, chances are you eased up on the throttle (otherwise you'd be banging rev limiter) and vtec is no longer engaged. In order for vtec to operate, certain conditions have to be met. One of them is that the throttle is open wide enough to allow more air in.
