I thought that extra grime and dirt gets into your car when the top is down and the cover is there to help keep it out of the mechanical sections of the top?
Like I said, It's ok to be anal about your car and if you don't want any dust to get on the exposed frame arms of the top by all means put that sucker on. Just make sure you don't ever roll your windows down while the tops up for heavens sake, or you're liable to get some dust on them then as well . Seriously though, dirt and grime? Unless you're driving down gravel roads there's usually not much that's going to get on the exposed part of the underside of the top and rails. If you are driving down really dusty roads or parking under trees chances are you'd most likely want your top up to keep everything out of the rest of the interior anyway. And it's not like the roof structure/rails are precision machinery. A few links that pivot maybe 180 degrees at most when folding/opening. A little dust won't affect their operation.

I wonder if you left your top up just a little bit if it would function as a spoiler in a pinch

It's OK to be anal about your car. Really. But at least use excuses that make some sense . This stuff about the "wind" beating the crap out of the top when it's down is pretty funny. The wind does absolutely nothing to the top when it's down. What are you people doing? Driving around with the top half way down? When it's retracted all the way it's neatly (and tightly) folded down on top of itself in a hole. It does not bounce, flap or in any other way move about. The wind has no effect on it. The only thing the cover does is keep dust off, for the most part, the top fold (not even the window). Some of us even think the S looks better without it because it sticks up so far and messes up the lines of the car. Every time I see an S with the cover on it makes me think about those big ol' thick foam neck braces whiplash victims wear .

Having owned a couple manual top roadsters in the past (and as someone who puts the top up and down all the time), I will however stick up for the electric top .

i think you are right, it looks better with the top off i n pics i have seen...most boots, esp the s2000, do look like a neck collar...although i do think the s could give you whip lash with all that cornering force!!!!

If you don't like dust, don't buy a convertible.

I think it is a joke that the car has a cabin filter when I either have the windows open or the top down all of the time.
I don't think I was refering to "dust" in the car... I'm refering to what Honda says in the owners manual about using the cover.
