In my garage -- in reverse with brake off
Anywhere else - in reverse with brake on

Reason: The only place it sits long enough for the brakes to stick is in the garage, and the floor is quite level there.

I use reverse because back in the dark ages when I was learning to drive, that was considered "Park" for a manual shift car. Whether it's really a lower gear than 1st in our cars, I don't know.

folks parking in gear only, the only thing holding you is engine compression which over time, can, and does leakdown. if inertia and gravity overcomes the next compression stroke, away she goes!

a diesel, if fuel is not shut off, can actually start and runaway if parked in gear without brakes set.

those who wish not to use the parking brake and park on steep grades should use wheel chocks.

And if I am on a hill, I will park with the wheels pointed toward the curb. Safety is my middle name. O.K., it's really Timothy, but I'm just trying to be safe.

overnight S is in my garage on very level ground so I do 1st gear no P-brake. I had a rear disc lock overnight (very cold night) on my Lude and ever since...

Any other place its P-brake and 1st gear.

If it's flat.. just the ebrake ... any slope and I'll put her into the appropriate gear and make a mental note.
