how do I straighten the shift knob?

The RSX shift knob is the exact same one that came on the 00-01 S2000s.

Your issue is indeed that you're missing the lock nut. You can purchase one for about $3.

you can always buy a tap and thread the knob until it screws on straight. I had to put like 1/2 turn in mine, took like 5 minutes. now, it fits straight (and lower) without the lock nut.
