If they want to go for a ride, I take them. If they ask to drive it, I say 'no.' It's not that hard.

 

just laugh and make a joke and slowly change the subject. most people will get the point.

i told one family member i would let him "go for a ride"--i drove.

 

I just tell them.. No, my insurance won't cover you. your insurance won't cover you. You're broke and won't be able to pay for repairs when you throw it into a curb.

I have never asked to drive someone's car and probably will never. If they offer, . If they want to drive one soooo bad they can take themselves down to Honda and test drive one. This all reminds me of that part on the movie "Friday" when the crackhead neighbor asks to borrow Smokie's car.

It sounds like a bunch of you know what I am talking about regarding the fine line between being a car snob and a nice guy/gal. I am coming off a Civic where I would let anyone drive that thing, so this is a bit of a change for me.

 

say what that uk singer, jamiroquai?, said when clarkson(topgear) asked to test his enzo" can i test drive your daughter?" something like that.

 

No one drives my S. People ask to drive it all the time and I simply say "no." It's not hard at all.

 

Im actually very generous with my car. I will typically let any reasonable person drive the car with me along for the ride. Most of the time they are too nervous to do anything aggressive much less dangerous with me in the car.

If it is someone that I simply do not want driving my car, I just dish out the straight forward "no." It doesn't have to be mean or rude and you do not owe them an explaination. It is your car. You paid for it. Period.

I do like to fall back on the old "gas, grass, or ass - no one rides for free" though.
