i believe the speed limit (not mentioned in the s2k manual) people are referencing is based on what they have heard about break-in for other cars. our cars are at a much lower RPM than others at highway speeds so there shouldn't be any trouble taking the highway home.
i have been driving mine from 5 miles on the odometer to just over 400 now and it hasn't seen vtec but it has seen 70-75mph on the highway.

Take twice as long and drive Hwy 1, instead of 5 or 101 and it won't be a problem. This will ensure that you vary the speed and run through the gears and should be a blast with the top up or down.
VTEC on PCH should be a requirement for the Honda-folk

But since it's the engine we're referring to, you should be able to go up to 5k rpm without issue. Just make sure to vary the speed and RPM as you go. 5k is high enough to go down the interstate, even in Cali.

Actually, the S spins faster than a vast majority of cars at any given speed in the same gear. The 4.11 gearing sees to that.

What I did when I needed to drive highway during the break in, was that I'd cruise in 6th for a minute or so, then shift to 5th, then to 4th, then back to 6th, repeat. Or, I'd leave it in 5th, and vary the speeds by speeding up to 4500RPM, then coasting back down, the going back to 4500 rpm again. Granted, I didn't drive 300 miles in one shot.
I don't think you have to keep it under 50mph, just keep it under 5000 RPM. I did this for the 1st 1200 miles.

You should be fine driving home on PCH. It would vary the car speed without going over 5500 RPM. You would have a blast at the same time, with the top down, good vibration (music), the beautiful weather and scenery.
Enjoy,
Enjoy,

I'm from LA and I was thinking about buying my S up in the bay area - is it ok to drive it all the way home on the freeway? As I understand, when breaking in the s2000, you should vary your speed and not stay at any one speed for too long (ie. no long highway trips). Have any of you purchased your car far from home and drove it back? Does it REALLY matter? Thanks.

Second, why are you going to buy it from Bay area ? Is it cheaper up there than in LA area ? Did you check out the price in Orange County ?

Just don't use the brakes hard, except in an emergency, vary the speed, shift gears frequently by rev-matching on downshifts, and get the engine warm before hitting VTEC. I hit VTEC within 10 minutes of driving my new car off the lot and it's running very, very good. Not a drop of oil consumption in 3,000 miles.
