Default High Mileage on an AP1

I'm looking at a 2002 s2000 right now with 170k miles on it for $9k. What do I need to look out for / replace if i get it?

when was clutch replaced?.. all fluids change all of them.. diff, brake, tranny, oil, cutch, etc check your brake pads... and also before you buy it.. drive the shit out of it.. take it to 9000 rpms in every grear (1-3) make sure that the engine is strong... and feels good.. and no CELs come on... also you could take a compression tester with you and see what the compression numbers are on each cylinder...
thats bout it...

MAKE SURE AND DRIVE IT HARD BEFORE YOU BUY IT... that way you can uncover any hidden problems on the spot...

good luck

Agree w/ compression and leakdown.

Figure you are getting a deal because of the mileage, but its not a deal if things turn up wrong. I know its tough to take it to a shop and spend some $$ to check it out...but its cheap insurance.

I met a guy (Hockey) that had 174k on his S at the Fun in the Sun meet and he was running strong!

Maintenance is key.. Dont think of it as "will an S last 170k"...but when cars get that high up, if an idiot owned it for those 170K.....beware.

I would suggest saving another 3 grand and getting one with 100K LESS miles.

Thanks all. I found a motor and tranny from an 03 with 43k miles that I may swap in. We'll see how it turns out. If the car was owned by a friend previously and I knew its complete history, then I wouldn't have a problem.

The mileage, given that it was taken care of, doesn't bother me. My car will easily have another 25-30k miles in the next year.

I'm just on a tight budget and am set on an s2000.

Does anyone know of anyone selling a s2000 with a blown motor in the south? I'd take a look at it. I'm looking for a project that I can drive.
