Help with breakdown of S2000 pricing
#21
I'm ordering an 03 this winter and best price I have gotten is 32.200 + 60.00 doc. charge. The thing that got me was they had a new 02 there going for 30160.00. I'm thinking they should be able to go closer to 30k for an 03 this winter. A $2100 diffrence for basically the same car seems like a lot to me. What do you guys think?

Not very familiar with the west, but look into an adjacent state. Some states offer $0 sales tax for out of state buyers (usually military only) or have a cap like South Carolina (not to exceed $2k)

Correction: Here in South Carolina, the sales tax is capped at $300, regardless of the price of the car. However, there is an annual property tax on the car. For 2002, the tax on mine was $591 - just paid that bill. Next year, it will be about $500, and after about 3 or 4 years, down in the $200's.

Typically most states want to collect sales tax when the car is registered. If you buy it from a dealer, the dealer will collect the sales tax and pay it to the proper agency. If the car is bought out of state or from a third party seller, sales tax is usually collected from the purchaser when the car is registered. With some exceptions this is how sales tax is generally handled.
If you trade in a car on the purchase of a new one, no sales tax should be collected on the value of the trade in. The theory being that that portion has already been taxed. For example, if you trade in a car valued at $10,000 on the purchase of a $20,000 car you should only pay tax on $10,000. That is (cost of new purchase - value of trade in)*sales tax rate=sales tax due.
The document fee is typically the fee the dealer collects for title. Oftentimes the dealer will tack on an amount of money, disguised as a fee, to pay for their messenger and the time and paperwork the dealer has to do. Generally, this is not a huge amount of money and in this case, $60.00 may not be worth making an issue over. Generally, this fee is negotiable and I have never heard of it becoming a "deal breaker". This depends upon the purchaser and how strong he/she feels. The buyer should always question this fee. Often just mentioning it will get it reduced. Unfortunately, most buyers accept this fee as a given, but it is not.
