My OEM rotors are going red with rust after only 2 months (damp climate in UK does not help!)I want to replace them with some that will do a great job of stopping and are resilliant to the dreaded rust problem. I have done a search and found that there are a few rotors that people are talking about that are in the trail/test period,any news on them? or are there any good rotors that will do the job in the market place already? I dont suppose there are any made of stainless steel out there? I have a set of stainless ones on my HOG and they do the job just fine.

 

Rust is normal... after probably half a mile it will be gone. Plated rotors look good, but that plating isn't the best when braking.

You are right, the stock rotors are untreated and just look crappy with rusting edges and vanes. Some of us have tried paint with limited success, but the real answer is some sort of plating or dip that wears off the swept area but protects the rest. Although you could do it with stock rotors, RM and others make aftermarket rotors that are treated. There were a couple of threads in the other forum that discussed some options.

Have the rotors cadmium plated followed up with a dichromate dip. It'll pobably cost $50 for the lot.

Just go to the one-hour chromium-plating/dichromate-diping place at your local mall. I think they're usually next to Lens Crafters.

What I described is exactly what is done to all those gold colored bits under your hood and rotors and anti-roll bars you see in the aftermarket. This coating can be done in silver also.

In the area of contact with the brake pads the cad plating will wear away. This is inevitable.

To find a plating vendor look in hte yellow pages under "plating".

 

Yes it is possible. Here is the pic of my brake calipers that were cad plated. Ideally it is done to new parts since they must be perfectly clean, so often they try bead blasting and an acid dip, but the vanes will be hard to clean. The plating itself is usually not too expensive, maybe $15 per piece with a minimum $50 batch charge.. it is the cleaning and any masking that is more costly.
