i have been trying to get the hang of these techniques, but .... and here are some questions:

1. is it necessary to rev match when upshifting? what are we trying to accomplish here?

2. we blip the gas pedal right before shifting, or after shifting and right before engaging the clutch? why one is correct and the other is not?

3. how do i know if everything is done right? is the rpm difference (before and after engaging the clutch) a good indicator?

For smooth shifts you must rev match on downshifts and upshifts.

It's just that most people are rev matching on upshifts without knowing it but letting off the gas to rev match the higher gear. Downshifting requires a less than intuative blip of the gas to rev match the lower gear.

so why not blip after shifting?
now i am trying to rev match when i want to upshift. sometimes it is smooth, sometimes the car slows down, sometimes it jumps forward (too much gas, if this happens, am i clutch dropping?). but at times i am thinking whether it is waste of gas to do rev match when upshifting since the transition is smooth most of the time (higher gear, higher speed).
rev match while downshfiting has been discouraging me. maybe after 1000 tries, maybe....

You shouldn't have to rev match when you're upshifting. It's only for downshifting so your engine is in sync with the wheel's rotation speed. When you're upshifting, the next gear up is geared for the higher speeds. Lower gears aren't so you need to blip the throttle.

Why on earth would you rev-match when upshifting?
Because if anything weight transfers to rear and you are fine when upshifting to upper gear.

Its all about weight shifting and minizing the sudden weight shifts when entering tight corners. Heel-toe braking so called is must have skill for proper road race and even spirited driving.

You rev match so there is not suddent weight shift from rear to front when gear is lowered as you are entering the corner fast and braking at the same time.

No need to rev match when you are upshifting. But you need to heel-toe brake to rev match when downshifting especially if you are on the road track.

For everyday granny driving, forget it. No need.
