HEADLINE: Race car driver Rick Hesel gets Yellow Flag on PACE lap ;)
#1
You read that right, kiddies...our illustrious Rick (of high-quality leather fame) managed to yellow flag us on the PACE car lap at the Limerock meet today. I can't say for sure if it's a first in racing history, but I'd bet good money on it
I'll let him fill you in on the details, but suffice it to say, he'll be pickin' the grit out of his calipers, rims, and bumpers for days to come.
We have pictures But the memory of coming around the corner to shoot up that steep hill and seeing his ass-end moving faster than his head-end into the mud was precious enough for me.
Cripes, if the guy isn't making more cool toys than anyone else he's having more fun than anyone else on the track! Oh, and I'll be damned if the wheel badges didn't look the shit even covered in mud...I'll have to order my own set.

I knew those leather tires would never work!
On the other hand, perhaps this was his way of honoring all the Indy car drivers who have spun or crashed before the start of the Indy 500. After all, this is Memorial Day weekend.
Later in the session, did he also "spin and win," just like Danny Sullivan?

Here's what really happened. There's a really good explanation, so don't believe anything else others post here.
The touring car races were right after the parade laps for the S2000s, NSXs, and Corvettes. After a pathetically slow and miserable job by the Viper pace car (who was sliding all over the place in the rain and not going more than 5 mph most of the time), I decided to forget the parading stuff and just park my car at great vantage point for the next race. So when we started up the only steep hill on the track (if you know Lime Rock, the bridge over the track is at the top of the hill) I waited until the S2000s ahead of me cleared the hill, then floored it, and in second gear, just at Vtec, put it into a beautifully controlled 360 degree skid, and slipped into my own self-made parking space, right along side the course, in great shape to watch the upcoming race.
Only problem was one of the track marshalls thought I had actually skidded out of control and didn't realize that I had chose that spot for parking. He yellow flagged the track, then made me back out and continue on the course. Damn! I had the best seat in the house and the marshall screwed me!

It was a sight to be seen, I can still see it hapening in slow motion. Too bad I decided to forego installing the in-car camera, you too could have seen the the excellent parking job by Mr. "Leather" Hesel
