How much of a difference do you think a heatshield on a header really makes? I don't see it making the engine already hotter not cooler than it already is. And the cool air has already passed by before it makes any difference. Or am I just missing something? Why do you need a heatshield over you header?

 

i'd really like to take mine off, i just put the rick's header on, but i don't wanna hurt anything.

Its to keep the engine bay cooler. This not only protects your components it keeps your intake air cooler.

 

I know what it is for Just wondering how effective it really is. Like, car 1 has heatshield, car 2 does not. Whats the temp differences...

 

More important than keeping the engine compartment cooler, the header heat shields are mainly to keep the heat in the header primaries to improve scavenging effect.

 

Ya, the heatshield acutally is a good thing, it also keeps heat away from the underside of the hood. Under extreme cases (not on S2k) I've heard of paint bubbling on the hood. Now I don't think that would happen in our case, but, it also reduces heat to the A/C lines and battery.

My question is, why take it off? It only weighs 2lbs or so, and stock header looks ugly without it?

Now if you broke the bolts off in the header and can't put it back on, don't worry about it, its not a big deal, just save up and buy an aftermarket header.

Trying to decide between Rick's and Megan Header

 

ahh...ya its not really a big deal in that sense, personally, I'm saving for the J's. Its a pretty header, nice to look at. But I'm going to wrap it or get the wrapped one.

Rick's vs. Megan is tough right now without that damn owner dyno, but, even still the two headers are made for different areas of the RPM band. Ricks gives proven mid-range power but sacrafices a couple hp up top. The Megan from the manufacture dyno appears to give power from 6k up but does nothing for low-mid power.

So if the main concern between them is the heatsheild, I would say forget it...get the one that provides power where you want it...if it doesn't have a heatshield but you want to keep underhood temps down, wrap the header...

 

or get a vented hood
