Default have you ever got more than 3 "bars" on your cooling temp guage?

i've noticed, no matter how hard i drive my car, the coolant temp doesn't go any higher than three bars. i've never auto-crossed it or took it to a track, but i have driven it aggressively enough to a point where i would think the coolant temp would go up. my corsica's ( i know, comparing apples and oranges ) coolant temp meter is normally at 3/8 but goes up when idling in traffic or going up steep hills as high as 5/8, but the honda keeps its cool (no pun intended, actually yes it was intended ) on the same hills and in the same traffic. have you had more than three bars and if so, under what circumstances?

Assuming the cooling system (water pump capacity, hoses, and radiator capacities) are up to specs required by the engine, the thermostat is what controls the engines temp.

If it only goes up to three bars, regardless of what you're doing with the car, that only indicates to me that you've got more than enough reserve cooling capacity to handle the additional stresses put on the system while pushing the car hard. That's a good thing!

As long as it's consistant, I wouldn't worry about it. If it ever does go above those three bars, PAY ATTENTION, because something has changed and you need to get it looked at before you do some "very" expensive damage to that wonderful engine.

FWIW,

In case anyone may think that it's not capable of displaying more than 3 bars, read this thread:

Some of the guys in Arizona who have added aftermarket grilles have reported 4 bars when driving hard on our club runs during our extremely hot summers. Those of us without grilles have stayed at 3 bars. I usually stay at 1 bar, but that's another story.
