Have you ever been to an autocross?
#101
Autocross FTW.
About halfway through college, I was overdriving my car on some backroads, hit some gravel, and found my way into a ditch. Soon after the car was fixed, some friends convinced me to try autocross, and I've never looked back.
You learn so much about car control for so little money. It's also lots of fun to ride along with other drivers and learn from them. If you haven't tried it yet, what are you waiting for?

You are far more likely to do serious damage to your car at a track day than at an autocross.
It was a rare track day I did when someone didn't do serious damage to his/her car.
It's extraordinarily rare that someone damages a car at autocross, and essentially never than a novice damages a car at autocross.

i get what you mean ckit, i was more referring to general comparison, not in the likeness of the two. for me, on my local forum, i have found great info, there is a track in san marcos texas, and the auto X events are in san antonio primarily (closest to me, but 100mi. away). so i was more comparing my options than that of two events of driving. but good points...i thought i would also be able to take a class there at the track in san marcos, one of the instructors was telling me that they host 4-5 events a year that are intro/beginer classes.

Thread back from the dead!
I'm really glad my dad talked me into Autocrossing. I was worried about damaging the car at first (which is why I'll never take it to a track day, it's my DD), but when I did my research I realized that rubber cones really can't hurt you.
I've been doing it for a season and a half now, maybe 12 events. I'm still learning, but I'll bet I'd be laughing my ass off if I were able to go back in time and sit with myself for my very first event.
And now it's winter, and I can't . COME ON MARCH!!
