pottzS2000 - That was Handa not HONDA. Handa Accessories wanted the big bucks to ship it from CA to NY. The HONDA dealer had no shipping charge.
The dealer waved the $272 because I seemed to know more about what was going on with the defroster switch than he or his service department. With getting the car at MSRP and working for a deal on the extended 7/75,000 warranty there was only so much room for negotiating.
Bottom line - I'm pleased with the deal!

One thing to ponder about the front spoiler (yeah, I know this thread is about tops ) is that I've managed to hit a few curbs when parking with NO lip. Just bear this in mind when adding additional depth to the chin...

Thanks Jeff- I'm skipping it for now, I may add it from Handa Accessories and do the simple install myself, thanks to the wisdom of those on this forum. I was surprised with the price differences.

There's no reason at all why the 2002 shouldn't be hardtop ready from the factory. When the S2K initially came out, Honda hadn't even considered a hardtop as an option - that's why, when it did become available, the car needed a modification kit (and some serious work) to install it.
I can't believe the 2002 hasn't already incorporated the cabling and hardware changes needed to accept the hardtop - except, possibly, the omission of the defroster button to the console. Before anyone considers paying a dealer to do an "install", they should check with other 2002 owners (and other dealers) what an install consists of, or ask whether the hardtop will just drop straight in. There's a good chance that if the dealer is asking for $272, he may be either ignorant of the fact that an install may not be necessary, or is trying to con you into believing the install needs a lot of work to install. You need to check it out.

My hardtop install took the dealer about 4hrs. and cost me $210 for labor.
As everyone was saying the wiring for the defrost button takes the most time of the install and yes the defrost switch goes right behind the ashtray in place where the coin holder is i think it looks pretty sweet in this spot as opposed to some people saying they don't like it there.
I would think that the 2002 models should take less time to install since a defrost button is already wired in for the glass window on the soft top.
