Yes, if I end up with an S2000 I am most certainly getting a hard top (and most likely OEM).

No Kit is needed for the 2005. When I said that "No installation kit is required for new S2000s", I was referring to a 2005 model... as a 2004 model is no longer the current model year. Required kits are as follows per hardtopguy.com:

2000 VIN UNDER 5730 hardtop installation kit #275 - $ 650.00
2000-2001 Hardtop installation kit #273 - $525.00
2002-2004 hardtop installation kit #274 - $ 399.29

There are some parts needed for the installation... 2 plates that mount onto the body to secure the back of the top and a few trim parts, but they're included with the top at no extra cost!
I put a OEM hardtop on my 05 S2K and had to install the back catchers and wiring harness for the defroster. The kit was supplied with the hardtop and also included new strikers (already on the MY 05) and a defroster switch (already on the MY 05). It took me a couple of hours to install the back catchers and the wiring harness and then another half-hour (with two people) to do the final fitting and adjustment of the new hardtop. If you do it yourself, I recommend that you wait to reinstall the plastic panels that you remove when installing the hardtop until you drive with the new top for a few days to make it easy to do final adjustments to the fit.

I love my Suzuka S2K with a Sebring hardtop.

The hardtopguy.com page now says "This kit contains everything you need to install a used hardtop on your 2002-2005 S2000" for part #274.

Sorry to dig up an old thread. I understand that the different hardtop installation kits are for different year models, but I'm curious why the big price difference. What's exactly different between the kits?

thx,

I think I found the answer further down my search.

Sounds like the difference is the stuff to get the defroster working.

Flaggstaff Honda in Arizona is now the cheapest place to buy a hardtop. With shipping, the total comes out to $2700 with everything needed to install the top on the car. Call and ask for Eric Dhooge in parts. I have bought a few things from him now and have received excellent customer service (multiple update calls to me, same day emails).

I believe Hardtop Guy has now gone up in price since this thread was made. I believe now it is $2700 plus tax and shipping.

Supply of the factory hard tops (and mounting kits) from Honda have not been consistent.

You could get them for a while, then none, and now? Something about a fire at the factory, I don't recall exactly at the moment.

I got a used top when none were coming from the factory and then had to scrounge a used set of catchers as well. Seemed like Honda didn't feel the need to supply the ancillary parts if they were not selling the tops.

I had not heard about the newer cars coming with the catchers and would look and see for myself if I had one and was thinking about getting a top.

It seems like an un-necessary expense for Honda to put them in at the factory considering the very limited numbers of people opting for the hard top option. They would much rather sell the parts later and get the labour to install them.

Not sure what happened in the past with the supply of new ones, but presently there is no problem. I received mine in less than a little over a week.
