That said, we can all agree chirping is fun.
That's pretty much what I'm talking about. When going for agressive, 1/4 mile acceleration, I get the fastest times when I roll into redline and chirp the tires on the shift. I can only do it by shifting very fast, but I don't powershift (i.e. keep the accelerator down throughout the shift). In hard acceleration, I begin the shift a fraction after I stomp the clutch, so that I'm hitting second as the clutch hits the floor. I also don't sidestep the clutch, just in/out with solid foot contact. I get better times this way, but the tires only chirp about half the time. Maybe I should say it's a "good" 1/4 mile shift. Anyway, I think a 2nd gear chirp is considerably less strenuous on the car than clutch drops or heavy bogging, but I may be wrong. I'm still learning a lot too.

Also, I live in Florida, all my driving is in a straight line. No way I'd ever do this thru a turn or curve.

jvils,

Bad clutch drops (read: spins) are definitely bad -- but they damage the clutch, not the diff. The problem is that the clutch is pretty cheap to repair/replace -- but the diff is an expensive, expensive, component.

How did we get from "new stick driver" peculiarities to "performance" driving?

Yeah, we did kind of wander off there, but I'm learning stuff I really need to know if I'm going to be driving this car as hard as I do. I thought chirping the tires was harmless, So it's all good.
