I've been driving from Altus, OK to Grand Forks, ND for the past two days. I have finally landed and have mixed results with gas mileage.
Tank 1 = 286 miles/11.118 gallons = 25.72 mpg
Tank 2 = 168 miles/ 5.839 gallons = 28.77 mpg (filled up prematurely)
Tank 3 = 311 miles/10.686 gallons = 29.1 mpg (best tank)
Tank 4 = 280 miles/11.253 gallons = 24.88 mpg
Average = 27.12 mpg
Seems as though I got the best mileage doing 70 mph. I was in a 65 mph zone for most of tank's 2 and 3 where I was usually doing a costant 70 mph. During tanks 1 and 4, I was in a 75 mph zone usually doing 80 mph+, which seems as though takes its toll on mileage. I also had over 300lb of cargo in the car besides me (I weigh about 130). My car weighed 3080lb with cargo, less me (I actually weighed it) and I know that the car weighs 2700lb with an empty tank, less spare tire and jack.
I can see 342 miles being possible, but I can't believe you got it doing 85-90 mph. You must have been driving with a blanked out fuel gauge (and low fuel light on) for quite some time to get 12.48 gallons in the tank. I filled the tank within minutes of the light coming on and I got about 10.7 gallons in there (leaving 2.5 gallons in the tank). When I take the gauge down to nothing, I get about 11.1-11.3 gallons in the tank, leaving 2 gallons in the tank. I think that if I would have kept going on tank 3 (311 miles), I would have been able to hit 340+ miles, but I would have had to drive a long time with a good chance of running out of gas. I stopped to fill it up at two bars left.

Recently got 30.1 mpg over 300 miles between San Jose and Santa Barbara, CA.
Drove mostly 65-75 mph on Hwy 101, using cruise control much of the time.
I wonder how the mileage at lower steady state speeds would be, but the car is soooo hard to drive slowly

I typically fill up at between 260-280 almost always takes about 10 gallons.I drive almost exclusively backroads 45-55 mph. Mileage doesn't vary much even when I baby it.
