Great, just what we need - Car and Driver comparo

Wow, this thread is getting way OT. You guys from Canada need to watch more hockey and keep the personal attacks off the boards.
I think a lot of you are missing the point. I read the article and had an ear to ear grin afterward. Why? I knew is was a bunch of baloney because I get to drive one everyday. Now that the S2000 honeymoon is officially over (3 years with no substantial changes) all of the armchair quarterbacks that read the car mags will go buy the next Miata: the 350Z. I give those cars 12 months before they are a dime a dozen.
It takes a true enthusiast who understands sacrifice to appreciate the S2000. Know what? It probably deserved a 3 out of 10 for amenities but I couldn't give a rat's ass. Give me a twisty road with the top down and that second cupholder and bigger trunk suddenly don't seem so important.

Good thing Honda isn't selling 50 000+/year of S2000s or they would need to raise the MRSP of the S to compensate for under the table deals they have with auto magazines and huge advertising campaigns to push the product.

C&D tested a random sample of the car as they should. It's just like when someone buys a new car they just get a random sample from the production line. There are instances that your car will have a stronger than average motor or weaker than average motor. You don't go back to honda and ask then to give you a car with the stronger motor do you?
Uh? And what is wrong with easily accessible performance? Don't you know that racing is all about consistensy? If you make the car easy to drive it means that you can get the best performace consistently. And that is how you get faster avg laptime and win races. What is the point of driving a car that only professional race car driver can drive it fast? After all most of us are not professional drivers.
The S2k lost in this test given the circunstances so get over it and enjoy your ride and stop crying!

[B]My main "gripe" with the article is that CD has said many times that 0.5 seconds differeince in 0-60 time is significant, yet this difference in this test and their past test of the S2000 raised no "red flags" with them, which should have motivated them to request another example of this car, and perhaps an alternate driver.

R6E36: Actually, when your own mag's prior tests show 0-60 in 5.8, other US car mags show as low as 5.2, and all the Euro mags show 0-100 KM (62mph) in the mid 5's, you DO have the car checked over if the best you can do is 6.3. Something was clearly out of whack here.
And I totally agree that there is nothing wrong with the MB C32 AMG. It will be our next car when the sedan poops out, unless something better comes along.
Thanks,
Richard

"The inflexible power band is also what makes the S2000 a somewhat unsatisfying drive in everyday traffic. "
WTF! Who is this Aaron Robinson downgrading our S2000?
I don't agree with the Car & Driver Comparison test. Coupe against our Roadsters?
I drive my lovely S everyday and I love it. The power band is the most flexible. Can Honda or anyone fight back?

Uhh, does everyone have to agree with you? I guess if someone has a different opinion than you then you beat them to pulp, right?

What I stated was a fact. I was faster than every S2k on street tires. There is no argueing that. What you stated was an excuse based purely on speculation that the the drivers not on street tires were bad drivers. No proof, just trying to bend the outcome to suit your distorted vision of reality.
Yes you were but so were those two WRXs. Heck, there was a Subaru 2.5 RS (170hp) on street tyres that was quicker than all but one street tyred S2000. Not only that but you were quicker than all the NSXs, Boxster S , 911 and even an RX7 on race rubber (by 2secs) .... not sure if you can read anything from that but that driver is the most important 'asset' in a car on the track.
all the Euro mags show 0-100 KM (62mph) in the mid 5's
That's not quiete right. Best Euro 0-100kph time is 5.8secs. Usually they are in low 6s but on the odd occasion climb as high as low (even mid) 7s. Same here in OZ - the mags here get anything from low 6s to low 7s for the 0-100kph.
Anyway, all magaizines get variation in their figures from test to test ... they get it for all cars. The variation is more like 1sec for the 0-100kph time. I am sure that I have seen 6.8secs for 0-60mph listed in some US mags before ... it's not that unusual.

I wouldn't worry too much about the article guys. Sounds like you bought the Stook for it's forte, twisties/track use, and or the convertable aspect of the car. In that regard there is no doubt in my mind that in stock form the S2K is a better car than my 350Z. I had the same problem when I had an MR2 Spyder that lost every comparo to the Miata just because the Miata had a freakin trunk!! Didn't matter that the MR2 was faster in a straight line, faster around a track, faster period. It would lose because comparo tests are done to find out what the "all around" best car is, and the truth was that the MR2 could literally barely hold a backpack. If the comparo was simply best track car out of the box, and nothing else mattered, no doubt the S should win. Pretty hard to argue though that the S is a better all around car than a 350Z though. How the Rustang got in there, I have no clue.
I'll take formerh22 up on his offer as the parts become available. JIC should have a pretty decent suspension available for the Z end of next month, early Jan and I am getting a set of SSR Comps for track wheels with some Hoosiers. I have a good friend that is going to help me sort the alignment for track use and a racing seat sitting about 2" lower will go in next month. I also think the battery will need to be relocated to the rear to help the weight dist, and I guess for track days, a CF hood wouldn't hurt at this point (really need to move the weight dist to the rear). I really don't want to do anything to the motor like SC, but a chromoly flywheel will be available from Nismo next month and a KAAZ or Quaife LSD will probably be necessary as well.
LOL, I swore to myself I wouldn't do this. My MR2 was a brutal car to drive on the street, but it was insane on a track. I also have a 125cc shifter kart, and a 250cc superkart, so I said to myself: "Self, get a more comfortable car for street use and don't with it!" But as you guys well know, it's like heroin; you just can't stop. I also have an Infiniti I35, so that I won't with or else my wife will kill me!
Rivalry is fun and I am sorry if I don't come across as friendly at times. If you guys come out to the track, please say hi! I am really friendly in person! So I promise I'll try to keep it friendly, but I also love to win! But if I don't, it's cool, as long as we are all faster than the Vipers!
