Well, at the ripe age of 50, and having driven standards all my life (won't own an automatic) I don't see how after 8 months of trying to shift smoothly it could be me. But, my question is: do I live with it, or am I courting a bigger problem later. In other words, is this thing in need of a fix. It's really a nasty slap back into the palm of the hand if you don't really go gentle with the shift. My '87 Fiero shifts better, and that's a slow gearbox. I'm just afraid of the monkeys at the dealership with all the horror stories I've heard on this board.

This is a real problem, and as described, it is not driver error. AHM is hoping it will go away. However I still think this is a great car and this problem should not scare anyone off.
If you haven't done so Please vote in the TSB poll I created on this problem. I will bump it to the top.

I think that it is a clutch release problem. The clutch does not fully disengage, so the synchros grind when you change gears.

woodyandy - I also get the kick back when I shift from 2 to 3. I just shift a bit slower now, and it seems to help a lot. Too bad I can't drive the car the way I want to.

hecash - How much did you pay to get your new transmission?? Is it a Honda one, or did you go with an aftermarket one? I'm just curious since I think all of our tranny's will eventually blow up. There is another interesting thread about the oil pump in the tranny having a design flaw in it.

Im planning on hooking up a tranny to a lathe and checking out the oil pressure curve related to speed - where it drops off will be the safe speed limit of the original tranny's, Im also going to find out about the new pumps, all they had to do was change the rotors, which is what I think they did.

As for the grind, there never was a triple cone syncro as claimed, I dont know why - I have two transmissions right in front of me - one completly torn down, and I see some parts I would really like to ask the engineers about. With some clever re-engineering and TLC these gearboxes can be made smooth as butter - but NO it is NOT driver error on the shifting thats all BS!! Dont beleive the hype, the pausing during shifting just hides the problem, duh I had to do it for 2 years, and even after the fix, but I figured I would keep quiet untill the total failure that left me stranded.

I abused the hell out of my nissan pickup truck getting that S2000 1800 miles home, it didnt fail.

My failure was one that should never happen with a manual tranny.

You may be correct in some instances although I'll gamble on that problem being substantially in the minority.

I just purchased an 2001 model 2 weeks ago. I didn't notice at first until last week while trying to shift into 6th gear It was hard to do.I didn't even think twice about it. 2 days ago while trying to shift from 5th to 6th, rpm about 8500, I could not shift into 6th gear to save my life. Does it sound like my synchronizers from 5th to 6th is going bad?? Any help or feed back would be greatly appreciated.
