I wouldn't want my throttle wide open in 6th gear at 35 mph which is 1,885 rpm. I fully agree with shifting down low while cruising to conserve fuel and energy, but 1,885 rpm in 6th is a little bit low.

How retarded (sparkwise) do you think results from shifting into 6th @ 35 mph? Must really kill the mpg.

Hmm...anytime I'm cruising in the mid 30's I always use 6th. Seems fine to me. Stay right around 2k rpm's.

I've tried various techniques. Skip gears going 1-2-4-6 for freeway, 1-2-3-5-6 for city, shifting at 2800 rpm's. I complained about my gas mileage and I noticed that nothing I do while stuck in traffic will increase my mileage.

I drove home late from work one day with no traffic and I only used 1 bar of gas. Driving to/from work with traffic will use about 3-4 bars of gas. Commute is bout 25 miles one way. When there's traffic, we're talking about severe stop and go. I'm lucky when I hit a patch of highway where I can cruise 55mph. Most of the time I'm stuck riding the clutch in 1st or cruising in 2nd.

So while I'm stuck at traffic, I'm getting pretty crappy 18-20(If I'm lucky)mpg. If I'm straigh highway cruising, then 26mpg.

Around town I think I'm shifting at 3.5k - 5k. The engine doesn't seem to want to pull at low rpms and with such little reciprocating mass, it does seem like an unnatural act to try to make it. Also--if you need any accelleration, you'd need to downshift all the time. I leave it near enough the beginning of the powerband so I can access torque if I need to. I shift enough already thanks.

Should I be concerned with my MPG?? My last MPG was 23.5 -- I had about 60-70 miles of Highway Driving and the rest was city.

I did VTEC, probably 4-6 redlines, and shifted at 4k otherwise... 23.5 is reasonable then right??

Thanks!

All depends on road and traffic conditions but ..

Up to 15+mph I stay in 1st
Between 15+mph to 34mph I stay in 2nd gear
Between 35-50mph in 3rd gear
Above 50mph+ 4th gear until reaching cruising speed on our motorways of 80mph when I switch to 6th

Generally shifting at 5krpm unless going for outright acceleration and then VTEC all the way.

Used to shift earlier till I did an advanced driver tution day with a traffic cop who taught me to keep it higher as he prefered to keep the engine revs high to be better able to respond if you need power but also for its braking effect if slowing gently in traffic. Upside also includes getting more of that exhaust note

Fuel consumption average 28mpg which is spot on what the brochure here states for combined driving conditions.

I couldn't agree more. You people in 6th gear before 40mph need to have your head checked.

This isn't an LS1 with a redline of 6k. It's a wind em up 4 banger for a reason. You don't have to redline or even touch VTEC in any gear but keeping this engine at 2,000 RPM's is just silly. Why do you think you're between 3,500 and 5,000 on the freeway?
