This is a grey area as 38 mph is kinda borderline in between 3rd and 4th gears. 40-42 mph, I would use 4th to cruise. 35-38 mph, I would use 3rd gear as 4th gear at 38 mph results in a very low rpm.
That what I was thinking Racer. Right now I stay in 3rd at 38 mph even if it is for a length of time. The question of being in 4th occurred to me since the RPM wouldn't be around 4k for too long but not TOO low either in 4th. I'll stay in 3rd then. Thanks.

wow nhan you shift exactly like me I always shift to 5th when its 30-35, and 29 = 6th for me and its just a habit from more torquier cars. But hey the lower you shift the more gas you save and I don't need that power when I'm just crusing etc so not a biggie to me. 5th gear 35 I feel no bogging.

I just don't feel comfortable unless I shift above 2800 or so. I usually shift at 3500 in every gear. In my opinion, shifting like I do puts way less strain on the mechanicals and lets the engine do it's thing! Considering this car is meant to rev to 9000, of course it's not gonna have torque down low... reason why it shouldn't be shifted so early.

Hell I'm getting in the habit of shifting at 4500-5000 now... I just think of it this way... if I don't get into VTEC, I'm not wastin' much gas

I almost never shift until I hit 6000.

Hell, 65 mph which is freeway speed (cruising) in 6th gear is exactly 3,500 rpm. You would have to shift from 5th gear at 4,190 rpm (65 mph) to 6th gear to run 65 mph at 3,500 rpm. (cruising)

For those of you who shift well below the stated values, could you please let me know what kind of gas mileage you are getting?

I would think that anything less than what the Honda manual states would result in worst gas mileage.
