I installed new front tires with about 80% tread on rear still yesterday (alignment etc), with what's left in my gas tank ill be able to pull over or right at 25mpg and didnt have the install until about 60% gas tank and a good amount of vtec.

Very curious how much the alignment and tires will improve my mpg on my next full tank, if my results transfer i should pull just under 30mpg!

Perhaps some of you need your tires looked at

The alignment may have had as much to do with the improvement as the new front tires. Tires can make a significant difference though based on proper inflation and the width and grip level of the tires. Less grippy all-season tires yield better gas mileage than sticky summer/track tires do.

Have you done a compression test? You only have like 70k miles on the car.
I bought my '02 with ~37k miles on it, currently at 39,99XX. My gas mileage is as described in the earlier posts, at or around 21-23 with mixed city and highway for the last 3 months.

Compression still needed?
No, the money you'll spend on the test will never be recovered.

If gas consumption is a big factor, you shouldn't buy a sports car.
B.S. Fuel economy is a big factor for me, and I buy/own *only* sports cars. Fuel economy is the main reason I got the S2000 instead of an RX-8, though I wanted +2 seating and a fixed roof.

The most important thing in a sports car to me is *light weight*, which is also good for mileage. Low drag is also good for economy and performance (no-downforce street cars, not winged track cars).

For several years the 1st-gen Lotus Elise had the highest observed mpg (35, I think) in the back of Road&Track where they summarize performance of cars they test.

FWIW, I got 328.3 miles on 11.17 gallons when I filled up last night, 29.4 mpg. Last tank was 30.x. That is mostly highway, of course, but some stop/go traffic in there, too.

Keeping tires inflated (duh) and running minimal rear toe-in (I'm running 0.2 degrees total) helps.

Goodluck getting that if you are ever in CA. My best mpg is probably your worst haha

compression tester is $30. I think the OP is doing fine. The nice thing about the S is you can have decent fuel consumption or performance in the same car.

Why does everyone get so worked up about this topic? You notice people getting all excited over this?

I looked up the car and it's rate 26mpg freeway. I believe that's EPA's stupid testing formula of old which most people never saw. However I regularly see 26mpg + on the freeway.

Furthermore, this car was designed in the 90's when, you guess it, gas was stupid cheap. I rarely like to bash people for trying to save money, but this car is too old, to strung out and to 'raw' to be also amazing on gas. Why does everyone want more from this car?

It's sex on wheels. I smile every time I start it up. Life is boring with out it. It's a rock solid platform, 105K with nothing but fluid, tires, pads and rotors. It performs well both on the street and on the track. While it's 12 years old now, it's still fast for the money, and if you haven't noticed made it in the 10 ten to drive before you die list. I'm getting excited just typing this.

If you want to get better MPG you need to be lighter on the throttle, which you can do. And I've push 32mph out of this car once. It wasn't fun, but it happened. Try cruising in 6th, top up, ac off and hold 55mph.
