This is true, in actual usage you will probably never realize the increase in thermodynamic efficiency of the engine becuase of other factors. This includes fuel atomization, aerodynamic drag, and greater rolling friction in the tires...

So if I understand you guys correctly, a colder engine will result in poorer gas mileage. Since almost all of my driving is within a 5mile radius of my house I wonder if I am ever getting up to optimal operating temperature. On the other hand, I don't think its very reasonable to let the car warm up for 5 minutes to go on a 3 mile drive---so I guess I'll just have to get used to poor fuel economy in the winter.
