Try shifting sooner, your mpg should be higher than 15!

I think it's the engine, he has an MY04. That's a 2.2 liter wright? I think the rest is talking about an 2.0liter engine.

I certainly missed the part about being in Hawaii - my bad.

The 2.2l engine should help since the enhanced low- to mid-range torque and changed gearing will make the car more "luggable" around town or in slow traffic. Using first gear to move when second would work fine (just not the same cool sounds) will make a difference.

If possible, try some highway driving and carefully check the mileage. Try to fill up in the same spot, in the same way, before and after the test. If you aren't well into the mid-20s, there's something wrong. If you ARE there, it's simply the traffic or the way you drive in traffic (quick, hard acceleration to fill in the gap in traffic inching along, etc.).

Short shifting and feeding extra throttle for longer periods of time while accelerating can actually HURT mileage. For modern fuel injected cars, brisk (but not WOT) acceleration is actually better for fuel consumption. Get up to speed fairly quickly (a higher RATE of consumption for a shorter TIME), then shift to a cruising gear and keep it at even throttle.

Also remember that idling comsumes lots of fuel, and you're probably running the AC virtually 100% of the time. Taking short trips also has a negative impact on fuel mileage. Another factor could be hills and elevation....

I completely understand where you're coming from. I usually see about 180 miles per tank (10.5-11 gal per fillup) with no highway miles. When I have taken the car on the highway I've averaged as high as 27-28 when keeping the top up. But what's the fun in that? I've noted a drop of 3-4mpg when driving with the top down at speed.

Well, my trips are usually no longer than 1.5 miles each way. My work is really close to home. Maybe that's why. We'll see as the miles add up. I think I'll go for some more long cruises around the island to rack up some break in miles.

My work is also only about 5 miles away. Maybe the short drive has something to do with the bad gas mileage. By the way my 02 has 11,500 miles and the consumption has been about the same since I bought it.

If work is 1.5 miles away, you never warm the engine up to dry out the condensation that forms in the oil and exhaust. I'd be real cautious about doing that on a regular basis unless you change oil frequently (maybe less than every 3000 miles) and are willing to replace the exhaust system early. This would be a good case for walking/running or a bike or...

Try shifting around 3K. How hard do you break or acelerate??? That has A LOT to do with it. I normally get a good 25-27 MPG a week. I drive a LOT in the city, and a lot in traffic. I do vtec maybe like 2 or 3 times a week (Daily Driver). I think you definetly drive your car hard. Try and baby it for a week and see how it works out!
