The real question is - Do you ever make any money?

$35k in 2000 vs $35k in 2020 have very different values. I just don't see the S2000 exceeding inflation enough to ever make it an investment. Cars typically are the worst investments possible.

I'm sure for a niche group of folks the S2000 will be one of the best value sports cars produced during a time when we moved over to hybrid/electric cars. One of the last ultimate N/A motors.

In 50-70 years it will be an interesting car to see on the road. I won't have one at that time.

Why the hell would anyone sell their S2000?

I think the S2000 will be an enthusiast collectible but I don't think it will ever skyrocket in price the way that air cooled 911's have lately. Also, if you bought one new it's unlikely you'll make money on it (unless it's a CR that you never drove). For instance, I paid $27k (I think, or 24k) for mine in 2003. I'll never get 27k out of this thing again even though it's been garaged and very well maintained. What I will get is a very pure, reliable sports car that could outlast me. Money well spent if you ask me!

Will it become a classic car? Yes.

Will it be a car that we see at every car show in another 20-30 years, much like a Camaro, Mustang, 40 Ford, 32 roadster? I don't think so. It will still be a desirable car for a specific group of people, likely people that owned the car in their younger years.

There were more Camaros produced in the first year of production than all years of the S2000 combined. I'm pretty sure even the older Fords had higher production numbers than the S2000 but I can't find a good source to get an accurate number. While their numbers were so high, it is still really hard to get a hold of a good straight car after all these years.

I expect that the S2000 will be a very rare car in 20 years, but the only people that will truly care that they still exist are the people who knew what they were when they came out.

I hate to say I got this from watching TV, but...

Some of the "Chasing Cars" shows has demonstrated to me that you really need to be in the stuff full time. You see lots of examples of people doing just what we have been discussing. Holding on to a car in the hopes it will be worth something. What happens is an MI (myocardial infarction) or you are too gorked out and now you or the widow sells the thing for a low price everyone thinks is okay. The dealer/restorer get it cleaned up and makes some money selling it, perhaps at an auction. He is the one that really gets paid.

The other guy I know does not need the money. He does it for pure fun. He restores and drives old cars. For the right price, he will sell. He always makes money but his life does not depend on it. What he does is from the 20 and 30s.

Enjoy it. Drive the heck out of it. If its still around when you are heading for the great hereafter, will it to whom you desire and go in peace.

Buy another car...selling an S2000 won't give you a Porsche 911.

IMHO by the time it "skyrockets' anywhere it will be 20yrs down the road and the return on investment MAY be better than the same money in sound investments.

However, relative to other sports cars of similar performance it is a great investment.

We were looking at Boxsters at dealers when I test drove a recently traded s2000.

IMHO a 100k mile, cared for S2k is a viable purchase while a 100k mile Boxster is a scary proposition ( at least for me)
I never said the S2000 is a money maker. I just wanted to "spark" a discussion since recently I've s overheard people at school saying that it's the next E30.
Throughout my highschool life, and until I'm about 25 I'll be saving up for one.

I only see the S2000 as a niche car. Not a whole lot of people like em, or know what they are.
