I don't get how people not knowing what an S2000 is somehow equated to funny things people have said about our cars. They didn't actually say anything or have some funny comment about the car.
The S2000 is a fairly obscure vehicle. Many of the people I talk to who aren't avid gearheads haven't a clue what an S2000 is. Hell, even at the local Cars and Coffee I attend, the S2000 gets a lot of questions. I'd say most there know very little about the car.
The Miata on the other hand has been around much longer than the S2000 and is much more common. I don't think it would be a surprise that anyone is more likely relate to that car regardless of their gender.
At one Cars and Coffee event there was an older gentleman who was looking to buy an older generation corvette. He noticed mine and a few friends' S2000's and got curious. He asked us all sorts of questions about the car's handling and performance. He finally asked how much they go for on the street and one of my friends said "They can be had for as low as seven". He was meaning 7 grand. But the guy mistakenly believed he meant $70,000. Worse yet he thought that was an acceptable price and for a moment considered the car as an option. Had he actually been out to buy an S2000, I guess he could have made a "former" S2000 owner very happy. But it goes to show there really isn't much knowledge about the cars.

The S2k has a very rare and expensive appearance imo. Especially the almost-horizontal front-fenders, with a very thin distance b/n the upper wheel-well arch to the top of the fender. The only car I've noticed on the street to have this type of front-fender (besides the usual super-cars from Italy), is the new Aston Martin Vantage. But, even the S2k's fenders appear to be even more flatter/horizontal and more aggressive than even the Vantage, especially given its' proportions of a small car. Whoever designed the S2k's exterior was a bunch of geniuses. Timeless too.
Kinda sad that the upcoming future S2000 will most likely not be as wisely-designed, def won't be "timeless" and will probably try too hard to look too futuristic, modern, ricey and like an after-thought of the new NSX. It'll look like every other modern car out there - nothing special at all and totally unoriginal.

Bro-in-law... just last week: "Nice car! But, why is the hood so long and the trunk so short? I'd like it better the other way around. Then, you can carry more luggage on business trips."
He is into SUV's.

Service: Which Honda is it?
Me: S2000
Service: Sorry, what?
Me: S2000. It's a 2006 S2000.
Service: What's an S2000? I've never heard of it.
Me: You work at Honda service and you don't know what an S2000 is?
Well, still made the appointment and they performed the recall alright...
