While on the highway on my way home from doing a little shopping, i noticed a car coming up on my rear seemingly checking out the stook since he wasn't trying to pass me eventhough he came up quick on my rear...i slowed down to see who it was and it was some VW Beetle 1.8T that i had passed down the road. Once i see who it was i speed up no longer caring but he speed up with me...i wasn't trying to race but he wasn't letting up staying right on my ass. when i come to the toll booth i pay and he's in the lane next to me...after i'm done i gun and i'm gone and out way ahead of them but i have to hand it to the 1.8T it caught up with me and managed to keep pace until i went into 6th and then it was over...he was more aggressive then i wanted to be zigging in and out of traffic so i let him go. Turns out he took the same exit i did and we stopped at the light side by side and he asked me all sorts of questions about the s2k. Made for a fun drive.

If a stock 1.8T Beetle can 'catch up' to you, then you definitely weren't driving hard enough!

I know that those beetles go pretty well. Saw one come around a corner pretty hard and it looked planted. Although it did have bigger wheels on it and did look lowered. Besides, they should go well as they are built on the new VW Golf chassis.

Maybe he had modded his car with turbo and exhaust enhancements?

Awesome that he wasn't a snobby guy and that he wanted to chit chat about cars. Did you ask him about his car? Was it stock?

Do you remeber what color the VW was? About two months ago while driving home from AC late at night on the Parkway a Beetle came up on me and was very eager to play. I was shocked to see that he stayed right with me as I downshifted into 3rd at 70mph and pulled through 3rd and 4th. I did notice that is exhaust was much louder than any stock Beetle I've heard. I chalked it up to being a well modded Beetle. Maybe you ran into the same guy up in North Jersey.

The 1.8T Beetles have the same engine and turbo as the Audi A4 1.8T so there are alot of mods out there. A stock 1.8t Beetle runs low to mid 16's in the quarter. A chipped Beetle with intake and exhaust should run high 14's to low 15's. It would have to be beyond the stock turbo to give the S much of a run, especially on the highway. The 'turbonium' in the stock version doesn't flow enough air to have much highway punch.

Sime - i wasn't pushing it hard but i didn't expect it to have that much power after 80mphs which is where i slowed down to after a while. He was a totally cool guy...and had an admiration for the s2000. We pulled over and checked out each others cars.

as for his mods and i asked him if he changed the turbo and he said he had no mods. i was just surprised at it's stock power...not that i couldn't take it...i never left 5th gear on an open highway until i saw him come up behind me...so it wasn't like i couldn't beat him...i didn't think the VW Beetle 1.8T would be that quick. I we also hit a patch of traffic and i didn't want to go zig zagging through it for fear of a ticket which wouldn't be cool at all. But it wasn't like he was an asshole who figured he would whoop me with his car he just enjoyed the drive. Gotta respect that

There was one time a Beetle stayed with me for a long stretch of road. I dropped to 3rd and floored it and he was right there...like glue! We hit 110 and he was right with me. Even through some heavy curves I took at 85mph he stayed right with me. Imagine that...

I finally lost him when I stopped at a gas station and scraped it off the windshield. I couldn't tell if it had been modded because its engine was all over the place.

Swurvydel, how does your exhaust sound? Do you feel any performance gains, or just a better sound?
