when the light comes on and/or you have 1 bar left, you have about 2.0 gallons on reserve.
it states this in the manual.
when i'm on empty or close to it, i fill up to about 11.1-11.6 gallons. our tank is, i think, 13.2?
as for the modulating fuel reading, it happens sometimes, but usually its pretty accurate. on a full tank, i'll get home after putting 60miles on it, pull in to the garage with maybe one bar gone.
i'll then take off the next day and 3 bars will be gone in about 5 min. not a big deal. like someone else said, if you have doubts use the fuel reading along with your trip meter.
i can almost always guess how much fuel is in my tank at most times.
