first speeding ticket

Also check out TIPMRA and Natl. Motorist's Association (NMA). Jim Baxter has been fighting for driver's rights for years.
Fight every ticket - just showing up, they lose in court time. if everyone did, the system would fall apart - they count on your not showing up.
My last speeding ticket was 1978 - I got my first Escort 2 weeks later. It was a Maryland (wonderful state, troopers behind every tree, and Barbara McCrusty to boot) citation, but I fought it and won, based on the fact that the trooper who pulled me was not the one who clocked me, and I had a basis for hearsay testimony. As a member of the NMA, I had access to their defense kit, which helped a lot.
I am no attorney, just have a good memory and wrote down everything. I also made the (true) point to the judge that had I not felt strongly that i was in the right, i would not have taken a day off from work and driven 2.5 hours each way to appear.

I just got a ticket about 30mins ago. I was on I-70 here in Denver and a cop paced me in traffic and wrote me for........get this...........70.6 in a 55! Not even a million dollar McLaren has a speedometer that accurate. I was going to just pay the fine and be done with it, but this looks like a blatant attempt to get more money since anything above 15mph over the limit jumps the fine up substantially. I'll go to court on this one and see what happens.

Just to chime in on what natedoggs2k said about the guy who tried to double-plead down his case, its my experience that cops will often write the ticket for less than they say you were actually doing (mpg-wise). I believe this is an attempt to get you to not go to court because in court they will tell the judge what the actual speed was and make you face a possible higher fine/more points.
If the cop wrote you up exactly at the amount then you have nothing to lose (but time) going to court, there is always the no-show chance. It pays to listen to some cases before yours and see how the judge handles different "excuses". If the points really matter to you hire a lawyer - it will end up costing you more $ but they will likely get a reduction in points.

I also got my first ticket Sunday @ 1AM. Cop said I was going 58mph on a 35mph zone. I had helped a friend move from his apt to a house. The streets were empty and it was dark, I didn't even realize I was doing 58mph. I think I am getting a lawyer to fight this since that's the norm in North Carolina. I am hoping the penalty is not too bad since it is my first ticket ever since my 7 years driving. One mistake the cop made was to write down the time as 1PM, but I don't think that even matters. He was such an ass too, told me to have a nice day after giving me the ticket. I told him whatever and drove off.

If it's your first ticket, why not just take the driving school option, pay a reduced fine and have no points?
You guys are crazy for trying to fight it. You will most likely end up paying a lot more than if you had just done the above.
But hey, who knows, maybe you will get lucky.
Good luck!
