Default First mods to do to handle better

Straight line is boring

I would like to know the first mods to improve cornering ability. I am guessing tires come first, but what other mods are out there, anything besides coilovers?

Tires, alignment, and just for fun confirm that the spring spacers have been removed (nice free handling upgrade ;-)

+1 on Track day/Driving School/Auto-X

The S2000 has PLENTY of handling.

ya, the S2k does handle very well in stock form. A few things that will increase stiffness would be an X-brace and front strut bar. A larger/stiffer front sway bar will reduce some of the oversteer. And a nice set of coilovers will help to bring out the best in the suspension and tune it for any particular track.

However, I agree with the rest, some track time is the best upgrade.

Tires if you don't already have some great ones.
In this car, it's pretty much all driver after that until you are good enough to know what mods will improve your driving style.

stronger arms! (your arms ... the ones attached to your shoulder, not the lower control arms in the car)
