First Gear "Thunk"

First Gear "Thunk"
At a stoplight, completely warmed up, when i shift from neutral into first i get a small "thunk" as it engages. I don't think this is normal, what could it be? Transmission fluid?
Have a 01. 75K miles, fluid changed to MTF about 12K miles ago. Shifting is a little notchy

Most of the time this is simply the result of reengaging the driveline before the transmission has had time to stop spinning. Try waiting another count or two after you press the clutch pedal down before putting the car in gear. You may find that the clunk goes away.
