They are paying floor plan every month on this vehicle. losing money big time. I bought an 03 leftover new for 27k last year. If you are serious walk in with a check for a deposit as earnest money, or all of it. They will probably sell it.

the true cost to the dealer to have an 05 on the lot is 29,166.50. That's the invoice (29,640) and destination (515) less the holdback (988.5 (3% of sticker)). Anything called a "processing fee" is really a "profit fee," figure that accordingly.

on the 04s, it works out to cost the dealer 29,011. a new 04 right now is probably mid-28s, which represents an actual loss to the dealer on the car. it is last year's model and by the time the weather turns nice, it would be almost 2 years behind, whether the 06s are any different or not. but i wouldn't count on any new 04s being around this summer.

the S2000 is a nice car, dealers will expect to make a reasonable profit on the 05s.

When I bought my S in March of 2003 it was a left over 02. I found out about what the dealers payed after everything(at the time) and it was around $28,700. I ended up getting mine out the door (after taxes and everything mind you) for $29,000 after some negotiating. There were about 40 miles on her.

Why would you want to buy a brand new 2004 S2000 which would come with only 2 years left on the 3 year 36,000 mile warranty when you could buy a very slightly used 2004 (say with 1000 miles on it) which comes with the certified Honda used car waranty which would give you a full 3 years bumper to bumper plus a 7 year or 100,000 mile powertrain warranty. It's a no brainer if you ask me. I have seen 2004's with only 400 miles that qualify for the Honda certified warranty.
Something to think about. If you need to buy brand new, it must have something to do with ego.

Let me be the second person to point out that the warranty clock on a new car doesn't start ticking until after you sign the paperwork.

Buying a "new" sportscar has nothing to do with ego. It has to do with wanting to be sure that you are getting a car that has been maintained carefully, and not abused. Some people (like myself) are OK with a used car, but in my case I was buying my S from a friend so I knew it was all good.

I would buy a new one in a heartbeat if I had the financial means.

I bought my NFR 04 from a dealer for $26,500 (before tax, title, doc fee) in the middle of last month. The salesman said they had a razor thin profit margin and I was lucky finding the car when I did. The head manager wanted it off their lot...

At the very end after all the taxation and everything, I had the car for ~$29.5k.

You guys are talking about out the door price right?

Hello Hpark. So you go out and buy a new S2000 with the 3 year or 36,000 mile warranty. And say you drive the shit out of it, getting into the vtec zone all the time and in the 4th year of ownership the engine blows. Guess what your out of luck my friend.
Say I buy a very slightly used 2004 S2000 with say 1,200 miles on it for a lot less than you paid I might add, however it is a Honda certified preowned vehicle and comes with the 7 year or 100,000 mile warranty. Now say I drive even more shit out of mine, take it to the track every weekend and in say the 5th year my engine blows. Guess what??? Mine would be covered and like I said before you would be out of luck. So you would have to fork out for a new engine and Honda would cover mine.
I don't think buying new is worth it considering buying slightly used offers 7 years of piece of mind.
I think it is rather foolish to give up security and common sense just to be the first owner. Thats my opinion.

Let's see...where to start....

1. Extended warranty coverage(underwritten by Honda or otherwise) can be purchased/added to any s2k new or used.

2. If you "drive the shit outta your car and track it every weekend", good luck getting your blown engine covered by your Honda warranty. It's called "owner abuse", and it will void your warranty coverage faster than you can say "forced induction".

3. Do a search on these forums for "Certified Lemon". You will see that a "Certified Honda" isn't always what it is cracked up to be.

4. Warranty coverage is only as comprehensive as your dealer wants it to be. Getting something repaired under warranty can be a crap shoot (much like buying a used car).

...therefore....

...You buy your used s2k, and let someone else buy one new. Chances are they will both be fine, but the person who bought the new one will know 100% of the history/treatment/maintenence of their vehicle and if it is not abused and is properly maintained they will never need to use an extended warranty (but they can still buy one just the same). They can still "get into the vtec zone" as much as they want too.

Craig

**EDIT** Synopsis: While I agree with you that buying used can be a better financial route, I disagree that buying a car new is bad because it offers less protection vs. a used car.
