Oh my. I feel so ashamed.

Because of course a thief or someone in possession of stolen property would never lie and say it is legit even if the serial numbers are missing.

If it walks like a duck...

I hope you are able to find definitive proof that it isn't, but the odds of it don't seem favorable. Good luck.

You could always contact Billman. Since he does engine swaps and a laundry list as long as your arm of other work with S2000s all of the time, he would probably know the location of any identifying numbers on anything under the hood of this vehicle.

Or Honda.

I'm partly laughing because...

1. You called CHP
2. You couldn't find the VIN without a lot of work
3. Sometimes people pull the VIN off things when it changes hands IE a bumper I sold, I removed the VIN

Having or not having a VIN doesn't prove anything but the fact the VIN has been removed.

Call CHP again. Get the guy to come down to the local station with his motor. I want pictures and videos. Can you do this by Friday so I can have a real laugh?

Seriously though... if you're gut says move on. Don't listen to it. Part with the money and hope you don't have any problems.

Ok seriously. Avoid it if you think somethings up.

That's hardly assuming the worst. Here's a worse worst for you - you stole it and are wondering how to get rid of any traces.

But if you are legitimately asking here, not sure why you're pressing the question - as others have suggested and if I were you, I'd move on and find another one.

Anybody know if there are in fact "hidden serial numbers"?
I think the "hidden VIN" they're referencing is just the actual engine serial number (F22C - xxxxxxxx). They supposedly have a database to cross-reference serial number to the VIN, and then check in the national crime database to see if that particular VIN has been stolen. Heck even Honda should have this information, but may not be as publicly available.

Best bet is is giving the CHP the engine serial code: F22C - xxxxxxxx. and see if they can do anything.

Does it come with an ECU? I want to see how the electronic scan for the VIN comes out if that works. Is it already taken out of the car?

Is the VIN actually missing or did it never have one? Big difference there. If the head was purchased new from Honda as a replacement or replaced under a warranty repair, it will NOT have a VIN. Maybe that's the case? Obviously if it has tooling marks and looks like the rivets were ground off the back, then yes the VIN tag was probably removed. That doesn't however mean it was necessarily stolen.

Sorry, I know this post is 3 months old...

But, you've got to be kidding, right? You really thing the cops are gonna NOT take the car from you when it's got stolen parts, just because you have a receipt? Really?!

So, my iPhone, my Plasma TV, my Honda Accord and my Rolex and my Air Jordans are all OK? Cause I did get a receipt from the drug addicted notary public who just lost his job and is living on the street corner when I bought the stuff from him....
