Hey guys,
I'm bringing this thread back from the dead. Two days ago, I was on the freeway in Fourth gear at about 90-95 mph in the process of shifting into 5 gear. Somehow I ended up into 3rd, I did release the clutch for a less than a second then when I relized what had happened... I immediately push the clutch back in and shifted to 6th gear(Although the revs did bounce off the limiter). It was been two days and my car seems to run normal. I have the invidia exhaust so their is a purr at idle and the car hasn't idle rough from. Their is a slight ticking noise but I think that is normal and was their before. I took the car out again 5 mins ago and did some spirited driving to get my mood up and it feels fine and runs like a champ. Should I be worried and what are the first symptoms if I did do damage to the engine/valves. Would the check engine be on?
Does anyone know what rpm I would be at if I shifted from 4th to 3rd at 90mph???
Thanks

18 months back I misshifted from 5th down to 2nd whilst braking from 220kmh (137mph) for a right hander at the end of the straight at a local track. I guarantee I was doing at least 170kmh and once I heard those revs rising I instantly popped the clutch back in and shifted to 4th.

Needless to say, no harm done.

2kturkey,
That is absolutely INSANE, glad to hear your car is okay. I'm am still suffering from the paranoiya of the mis-shift though. I definately hear even weird sound now although they were probably their before the mis-shift.
Does anyone are a gear rpm breakdown? 1-6?

What rpm is 3rd gear at 90mph???

Thanks

I doubt you hurt your engine because redline in 3rd gear is around 90 MPH. If that's really the speed you were at, you didn't go over redline by much if at all.

it's around 8600rpm

from here

if in fact the F20C can safely rev to over 10000rpm,
in 2nd, it would exceed 76mph
in 3rd, it would exceed 105mph.

but of course, don't do it too often

I was messin around with an older Porsche Carrera, and from about a 50 roll i was in third Vtecing. We were dead even, i was approaching redline fast. *** The moment of truth**** The Shift in to 4th**** Boom i went into second at 90mph!! For that split second i was like then i jammed the clutch in and rolled to a stop at the light. Talked to the guy told him what happened. All he said was OOOOOOOooo. I was thinking...im gonna kill em. He said that it was a fast little car and said good luck. That was a month ago. The car still runs strong without any problems whatsoever.

my guess would be you didn't let the clutch out completely

the clutch was slipping when you missed the shift

you got away easy

i think there's no way the engine can survive otherwise

The only time I have ever done this was when I had my 01 Celica GT-S 6spd. I was racing one guy after I got off work.... I was about to hit the lev limiter in 3rd at 8300 when I went to hit fourth.... here came second.... the tach needle smacked into the end (a little after it reads 9500) and I had let off the clutch fast... came up to the light... ticking everywhere... slight missfire too... I was like ... drove the car like this for a week... after the second day, the CEL finally came on... and it ran like shit, after another 2 days, the CEL went back off and the car ran decently... I took it to the dealer.. they took it apart... only had very slightly bent valves, ported the head and fixed it... and afterwards.. it ran like a champ... hit 14.3 @ 98mph on it.

In stock form, the celica had a slopy long shifter, after I got the TRD unit, no more problems...
