Depending on where you live (dusty dry or high humidity areas) you should try to change them at least twice a year. Besides the dust/dirt these collect pollen as well and whatever else is in the air. Cheap insurance toward a better driving experience.

Just did mine yesterday too and i dont think its ever been changed by PO. Of course i put a hole in the new one that i had to tape up by the edge.

This was my air filter. Bought the car used in 2009 and just changed it for the first time with about 34k miles added on in that time.

cheap enough to replace.
if not just bang it the leaves/dirt out of it or vacuum it for hold over
