The extended warranties I've had in the past were either refundable on a pro-rata basis or transferrable at your option. Basically, you only pay for the portion of the warranty that you have used. I usually get a refund when I sell or trade a car. The last car I sold to an individual I gave the warranty with the car as an incentive to buy, and he was able to transfer the warranty for a modest fee ($50).

I once had extended warranty with Nissan. When I wanted out, they just calculated how much of it I used according to the miles or time used (whichever is higher), I gave me the rest of the Money Back.
