[QUOTE=i_heart_my_DB8,Oct 29 2009, 07:31 PM]Are you planning on running top up or down?
I recall once driving top down with some fried chicken in the trunk, and still being able to smell the chicken at freeway speeds.

I'd go to a race shop, have it install a second tank where the spare tire used to be, complete with a fuel pump to the main line. Add the electric switchgear so you can swap what tanks are feeding the engine. Start with the spare tank until dry and then switch to the main tank so you have a fuel gauge for empty, or add a second fuel gauge for the second tank.
Can a race shop do that for $400? Who knows, but it will be a sealed tank that won't leak or smell, making you dizzy with fumes. Its also the best way to get a seamless, invisible solution.
Otherwise, just tie some fuel cans to the back bumper like we used to do with Jeeps.
Lets keep this open so you can update with what you decide to do.

what i would do is make a rack on the rear of the trunk hinged so that you can safely carry some jerry cans and strap them down and they can still breathe, however rear window visibility might be poor. also, if you have a hitch that might be another option.

Update - the NATO gas cans are completely sealed and therefore do not smell like gas. Unless you spill gas on the outside of the cans.
You can fit 3 standing up in your trunk and have room for other goodies. At 5gals each this is an additional 15gal of gas @ approximately 90lbs in weight.

You might want to consider the fact that gasoline expands when heated and the vapor pressure rises as well. That is why gasoline tanks and containers are vented -- including the gas tank on the car. I can pretty much guarantee that it will be heated in your trunk sitting on top of the exhaust for an extended period of time. This can be a recipe for disaster.
