Default Exhaust rattle.

Hello all,

My car has developed a rather annoying exhaust rattle that only happens while the car is running.
I've checked other posts on the forum and have follows guidance, like banging on the cat and the silencer to see if anything rattles (have done it both hot and cold, and while the vehicle is off and running). I've checked all heat shields I'm aware of and they are all firm. The engine itself sounds fine. I am running a hfc without heat shields so I know it's not them. The exhaust stops when I put pressure on it. Ive checked and all the mounts and hardware seem solid, and the exhaust isn't making contact anywhere.

Any suggestions.

If the header S bracket is cracked it'll make an annoying rattle. Also possibly if its installed backwards.

This bracket is underneath car. Braces header to block.

Also could be loose tips.

I apologise.

I've uploaded it to youtube, so hopefully this works.

Good call. I will get the car up on jack stands tomorrow and have a look if that bracket is the issue.

I'm hoping there's a heat shield I don't know about that's loose.

Get a rubber mallet and tap from the front to back on the exhaust system.

Hopefully, you'll find the culprit.

Went and did it just now. It's coming from inside the silencer, so I reckon one of the baffles has come loose.

I shone a torch in and couldn't see anything so I'll be buying a new exhaust.

Probably after Christmas though as it's going to be an expensive couple months.

Torch = Flashlight
Silencer = ? Muffler?

Yes.

Silencer is British English for muffler.
And as you correctly said, a torch is a flashlight

The way the noise goes away when you use your foot like that on the muffler would make me think it's rattling inside the muffler.
I agree replace it. It's not SO loud yet though...
