Excessive rear tire wear. Any ideas
Hello All -
I have a '02 with 9300mi. I just went in for a oil change yesterday and all is well, with the exception of the dealer telling me I have 2% of tread left on the rear S02's I would say that 7000 of the 9300mi are all fair weather city driving. The car has seen little to abuse. Use not abuse. . I ran a set of AVS sports on the east coast on another car that lasted me 20k miles even thru the wintermonths which are a softer tire on a much heavier car. Also just wanted to say tire pressure was kept monitored. I heard this pre mature tire wear happened to the NSX when it first came out. Any experience/or ideas on this ?

You may be surprised just how much 'faster' you drive the s2000 than a 'normal' car, because you don't feel it. Think of the speed you can effortlessly carry through a turn, with no body roll. Then try it in a minivan. You may not feel like you're pushing at all, but the tires sure feel it. And remember that the treadwear rating on the S-02 is about the lowest you'll find, a tradeoff for more grip.
You want better mileage from the tires, let grandma drive...

I have seen a lot of people go through them in under 10k miles, but I drive my car pretty hard, no burnouts, etc. but I love to take off and fly through turns. I now have 12,500 miles on mine and they are still goin strong. I mean I understand the guys who autox will go through them a lot faster but as a daily driver you must really drive hard to go through them that quickly, I think I will get at least 15k out of mine if not more, who knows...

Oh - I thought they were good for at least 15k. When I do spring for a new set I will go for all four. Should I stick with s02's or change up?
Jeff you are right you reallt dont know how fast you are going. S2K is the only car I ever got pulled over in. R.

Are you keeping up with checking the inflation pressures on them? I have the equivalent of about 10K miles on my rear SO2's and I anticipate getting more than 20k miles out of them before changing.
ps. I keep mine at 36psi.

it's not just the OEM S02's either - I had toyo proxes T1-S and got just under 10Kmiles on the rears. The fronts lasted for two sets of rears.
I have S03's now; maybe they will last longer, but I doubt it - they seem to grip better than the toyo's, so they are probably at least as soft as the toyo's, maybe softer.
You could try a harder compound tire, but it wouldn't handle as well.

My rear tires were down to the wear bars after 11,000 miles of Bay Area driving. That's way better than the 2500 - 3500 I get from rear tires on my Ducati.
I consider it normal and just buy new tires when I need them.
