everyone get out your lighters......
ITS FLAME TIME.
Here is my question/complaint.
It seams that EVERYONE here HATES neon (not the car, everyone hates that. I mean the lights)
Whats with that. I know everyone is entitled to their opinion and all. But here is the thing.
Where i grew up, and the car culture i was involved in, it was standard to customize your car. If someone bought a car and didnt have SOMETHING on it with in a week they were ostracised. Now i buy my S and join on this wonderful board and all i hear is dont touch your car, ESPECIALLY neon. (i know that is not everyone opinion, but it seams the be the majority.)
Around here crusin is a daily activity. While some people come home from a long days work and watch TV, we go cruise. Attrach attention, chill with other enthusists, chit-chat, you know.
Let me tell you, NOTHING attracts attention like neon. In my opinion, the S2000 is a beautiful car. It stands out (especially in yellow, like mine) but there are still hundreds of other yellow S's out there. Buy customizing my S, its makes it mine. Its like my canvas, my way of expressing my thoughts, my personal style. I love neon. I understand that people hate rice burners. Trust me, i do too. They have ruined our image. But we shouldnt stop customizing cars because we are afraid of being lumped into a automotive catagory.
I want to hear other people opinons, let have a discussion. What is SO wrong about neon. All the pictures i have seen of neon, it totaly enhance the S's natural beauty as a masterful peice of enginering. Come on now guys, we didnt buy this car to blend in. We all, at least on some small level, love the automotive lime light. I understand the nobel fight not to turn our baby into a side dish (rice), but is neon really THAT bad?

Well, my tastes are more restrained. You won't see me putting those lights or anything that draws attention on my car. While I dont own one, around here an S2000 is quite rare and will draw attention anyway. As far as neon lights, yeah they are cool to look at on some show cars, on the street, they're a bit distracting to me. Also, the cars the lights are usually on are ugly to me. On a yellow S, I wouldn't do that because it would be too multicolored. If I wanted to make the car unique, I'd get some Rick's accessories.

It's YOUR car - I say if you like it, go for it.
I'm not a fan of neon, probably because it is a purely aesthetic modification and offers no performance gain (although on some level, I could probably stand it more than those ugly ass wings and body kits that make the S look like something Sigourney Weaver should have driven in "Alien". Also, my logic is the following: The only cars that have lights for the purpose of attracting attention are taxis, pizza delivery cars and other miscellaneous commercial uses. Do I really want to drive the only other type of "lit" vehicle that is not a rolling billboard? Hope that doesn't seem like I'm dissing you - just trying to have a good discussion on the subject. Like I said, if you really like it, go for it.

I don't mind attention, if it's positive. What I'm afraid of is if the attention is negative and that's what might happen with a car all decked out (even subtly) in neon. It's great for a car show but for cruising around town, people will look all right but will they say stuff like:
"Look at that dork". "What a way to spoil a nice car." "Ooooh, look ............... a glow worm". "Yo Home Boy, got any blow?" I'm not saying you'd get that where you live but in some places, you might.
Here's my comical view on the subject:

You don't see Porsches, Ferraris, Rolls Royces and the like with neon. To me, it is a vanity thing. I makes people look at the car and then the driver. Usually not in a good "neon" light. There may be hundreds of Spa yellow S2000s out there; but , the car is still rare enough for people to notice without the neon. Plus, the police would notice you more with the neon than without.

Do what pleases you. I've seen at least one of each of the car's Dario mentioned painted in some 'screaming paint jobs that draws all the attention your seeking'. Personally, any that I've seen leave me smiling or perhaps laughing would be more accurate. But, then a lot of the after-market add-on stuff has the same effect on me. The rear wing mentioned earlier is a great example. It would look right at home on a true Sports Racer but on the back of the S2000, it makes me shake my head that anyone thinks that looks cool. However, some folks do. So, like I said in the beginning -- do what pleases you, not me. Personally, I like neon bar signs.
