It seems pretty clear that these devices are "recording data". Now, aside from the Honda engineers back in Japan, I doubt anyone else really knows what ALL info can be extracted from these devices.

That techs here are only shown some info on their diagnostic tools does not mean other info is not in the box. Please, unless you wrote the code for the box, you cannot say what it does or does not do.

Think about it. Along with G force, isn't the vehicle's speed a crucial factor in accident investigation? Or when the manufacturer is studying chassis integrity in a crash, etc? I'm sure that if it's important enough, given certain circumstances, they can extract this data from this box or the ECU.

And like I said, check CNN's website, there's a story about a politician who almost killed himself in an SUV and the truck ratted on him that he was going 90+. This story surfaced within the last month or so.

That CNN story is what I remember watching.

The speed was used to incriminate... It's hard to hold that up in court but it is recording the crucial information to help recreate an accident.

If it records speed then what good is VTEC? If you're in VTEC then you're probably speeding.
But just in case. Where is that black box and what size socket do I need to remove it? (Just part of my weight reduction program)

Taking a look through the 2007 S2k owners' manual, it mentions that the 2007 model has a event data recorder. I'm curious to find out if any of the model years have it.
What page is it on, I can't seem to find it.

The ECU has been able to record certain events for ages, hasn't it? How else do dealers know if you shift into 2nd instead of 4th and over-rev?
Actually, they can't tell on the 00-03 cars. On the 04+ there is a record of the highest RPM events. Or so it has been said on this board.

But certain types of damage to the engine are essentially proof of an overrev regardless of other data.

I will believe that if it has a internal battery...

Haven't you ever heard of flash memory? Ever used a USB "thumb drive"? Or a memory stick for a digital camera?
