Simply based upon owners on this board.. I know not every owner puts in his VIN, but I also know that not every one with a failure is willing to post about it. Since any adjustment would be fabricating statistics, I do none. I know these numbers are not dead-on, but it is all we have to go on.

How many of those 45 were driver caused? If it is actually driver error that causes an engine problem, I can't see that as a failure of engineering.

"It sounds like you will worry yourself to death over "issues" rather than enjoy any car you buy. To bad."

This had nothing to do with the subject either...

I just wanted to know if you guys think the 04 will be more reliable. With the lower redline, more displacement, and so on. That is all I wanted to know.

So what do you guys think??

I don't mean to duck the issue but if you buy new, observe all the break in procedures, perform all the regular maintenance, and respect the car when you drive it................reliability will NEVER enter the picture.

The lower redline should not be any better or worse as far as reliability is concerned. It's just a guess, but the stress on a stroked S2000 engine is the same at 8500 as it is on the older models at 9000 redline.

I remember people telling me not to let my wife (OK, girlfriend at the time) buy an Integra GS-R because the redline was (gasp!!!) 8000 rpms- no way an engine that revs that high could last very long. That was heady stuff in 1995. The B18C would never make it to 100k miles, better get the B18B instead, it has a more reasonable redline- that was the advice I got.

Well, the GS-R now has 125k on the clock and it has needed exactly one $35 repair: the thermostat stuck open and the car ran cool. Probably broke due to those high rpms. BTW, the car still runs like brand new. Seems like every time we drive her car some 16 year old kid tries to buy it from us.

Somehow, I just don't feel like spending a whole lot of time worrying about whether the F20C or F22C is going to break. It has Honda stamped on it, it'll be OK. I'm sure a statistically small pecentage of the engines are defective, but that happens with every manufactured product, even Civics and Accords. There's always Hondacare if you're paranoid.

If you guys want a little fright, coupled with a strong reality check, I have to recommend a cruise through this thread: Hell

I'm still feeling a bit queasy.

Thanks for posting that link, just shows why I may be worried, which I think is reasonable. I know, the whole thing baout people who have problems say thigns and people who dont, well, dont, but still, makes some people worry.

Question : Starting when, do you NOT need to upgrade to the newer oil bolts. Should all of the 2003's be ok with this? When in 2002 did they fix that?

Jsn,

*All* MY03 models have the 4-bolt oil bolt. The switchover occurred mid-year in MY02. You can tell from the engine number. Barry WY posted the actual engine number where the switchover started in that thread I linked to... Can't remember it offhand.

Best wishes.
