Default Engine

I got my S2k stored last November! I usually let the engine run for a few minutes every once in a while for a fews minutes. Last time I did my routine there was an usual noise coming out from the engine that let me beleive that the oil takes a while to get to the valves.

Since then each and every time I start the engine it makes the same metallic noise until it gets warmed.

Any clues !

how often are you starting the car ?? you know the longer you let the car sit, all the oil goes down to the oil pan and there will be almost Nil lub left on the valves, so once you start the car, it takes about a few seconds to have the oil run through the engine completly which might cause the valve to tick a little bit louder. This should be normal and shouldnt cause too much engine wear. Usually what you try to do when you store the car for the winter is to take out the engine oil completly and take all 4 wheels off the car and let it sit on jacks. Also for a longer period of time in storage, you should probably take out the radiator fluid and also the tranny fluid, IMO.

roger,
Welcome to the forum. You should post general questions to the S2000 talk forum. Way down here in Atlanta we do not store our S2000 for the winter. When the engine is not running the oil drains into the oil pan. The longer the car sits the more oil will drain. So after a few days there would only be a coating of oil in the overhead cams shafts. When you first start the car the oil must be pumped up to pressure to reach the heads. On the down side if you have a burnt valve this is the time it will tap the most.

Another good reason to be using Mobil 1,.....oil pressure faster when cold.

Do a search on cold start rattle. My car has had this noise since day one. Once warm she purrs nicely. I now have 10000 miles and it still does make the noise. Some times it seems more noticeable than other times. Another board member took his car to his dealer for the same problem. They had 5 s2000's on the lot that they started up and all made the same rattle on a cold start. If I remember correctly, it has to do with extra slack in the cam chain tensioner.

Hi all:

There is NEVER slack in the cam chain on this engine.

The noise you hear could be "Piston Slap". This is normal for light weight engines (aluminum block) when they are cold. Cast iron engines have the same noise but you can't hear it because the block is so dense . The noise will go away when the piston expands to fill up the bore.

Very normal, just don't rev it up for the first minute or so when it is this cold.

HTH

Woodward,

Thanks for chiming in. The words "piston slap" do not sound too friendly to me. Could you please explain exactly what piston slap is? Why do some S2000's have this noise and others do not? What long term affect does this have on the engine's life?

Thanks,
John
