Default Dude, I can't VTEC

ya ya, Im a beginner in the whole manual shifting. I hit 600 miles today, and decided to take it up to vtec level. I came to a complete stop where I popped the clutch at 4-5k rpm; A semi-burnout. From there, I waited to about 6-6500rpm going about 30 mph before switching to 2nd. I then continued to gas full throttle until I hit around 7k going about 40-45 mph before shifting to 3rd. I did not notice the "VTEC" Action everyone talks about, so I stopped. What am I doing wrong?

It should be there. Try shifting at 8900 rpms. You should immediately notice the vtec engagement at around 6000-6500 rpms. Make sure your car is properly warmed up also. You can't go past 6000 rpms unless your engine temperature meter shows 3 bars.

You'll feel it... but it's not like this MAD explosion of power.

I've known people to try and compare it to a turbo spooling up... <boneheads>

The easiest way to detect it... is to simply listen to the engine. With a good ear, you'll hear the signifigant difference.

I thought I had no vtec also, when I first bought my car. You gotta break it in a little more. Vtec did not pull as hard as I expected it to be though.

I've only been VTECing for about a week now, and I can definitely tell a difference - sound and acceleration. I agree, don't be afraid to jump on the gas!!

Check the oil level to make sure it's full.

You can feel it and hear it, but I agree... it's really not that big of a deal. By the time you feel it kick in when you're in 1st gear, it's time to shift. Then by the time it kicks in when you're in 2nd gear, you have to back off because there's traffic everywhere and you'll end up flying right over the top of someone. Goddamn NOVA/DC traffic

I found a dyno test curve that someone had posted a link to a while back, and did some calculations from it. Just below 6000 rpm, the torque is about 135 lb-ft. Just above, it suddenly jumps up to about 150-153 lb-ft, and holds that to slightly above 7500 rpm, and then begins to roll off. So, the sudden torque jump as the camshaft switch occurs is about 13 percent, which is enough to produce a slight kick. The kick in the noise level is quite a bit more than that 13 percent, and really does add to the feeling of excitement.
Having said that, the VTEC effect is quite noticeable [and enjoyable] when you are at or near full throttle. A couple of times I have exceeded that 6000 rpm without being quite so near to full throttle. When that has happened, I did not particularly notice the VTEC effect.
