I believe 5th is the worst to skip as 6th is only a single synchro. probably.

Thanks for the heads up on not skipping gears. I've skipped 5th a few times and thought nothing of it, since it went so smoothly. I'll stick to the sequential pattern from now on.

Skipping gears and/or short-shifting are no big deal if done with some mechanical sympathy. I.e., don't skip gears on upshifts at high rpm (which would give a huge rpm drop) or if it requires you to lug/bog the engine in the higher gear, don't skip gears on downshifts if it results in too-high rpm in the lower gear.

For sure Honda was right to just make a blanket statement that you should *never* do it, but it can be done without undue stress on the engine and transmission. I only occasionally skip upshifts (limit one skipped gear) on the street, but regularly skip downshifts (also, limit one skipped gear) at the track. 139k on the clock, 100k street miles and 22+ track days with me driving it over the past 4 1/2 years, no synchro issues, original clutch.

Shifting scenario, I am still relatively new to a standard and just want some opinions. You're on the highway, cruising in 6th @ 70 MPH (obviously fuel saving mode with an S2000). Suddenly you have to break fairly hard because some moron cuts you off and breaks because the traffic ahead is slowing anyway. It leaves you ~ 35 MPH, but you haven't had time to move through 6-5-4-3 because you were breaking hard. Frequently when this happens to me, I will shift into neutral, rev match and choose 2nd or 3rd to continue driving - I haven't figured out a way to avoid gear skipping at this point.

Is this there any other way to handle that? Is it damaging when it happens in this manner?

^^^As long as the clutch is engaged when you are rev matching, you're fine.

I often may skip 2nd gear when traveling in slow traffic. 3rd to 1st but only after engaging 2nd with the clutch in. I think this technic is acceptible. Does any one have the opinion that this shouldn't be done? It would seem to me that this method would also be acceptable moving up through the gears i.e 4th to 6th but only after engaging 5th with the clutch in. Other combos I really can't see the point. 2nd to 4th, 3rd to 5th etc (up or down).

^^^yep. That works too. Engaging the gear, even with the clutch disengaged will sync the synchro with the gear
