Cutting 1 inch off stock shifter
Good Morning,
Just wondering on where I can find the piece to thread the stock shifter. I saw in another post that it can be done very easily to lower the stock shifter about an inch by adding threads where the stock shifter stops and then by cutting with a dremmel an inch off the top. I wend to advance auto parts yesterday to look for the tool needed for this and they didnt seem to know what it was. They had the tool to add a thread to a hole, but not to create a thread from a metal shifter. In the post I saw, they used 3 dies and a t handle. By any chance does anyone know where to buy this. Do I have to go to a hardware shop instead of an autoparts store.
Thanks

Try Sears - Craftsman makes the dies. BTW - in my 01 I cut the shifter and used a Voodoo - turned out well. I didn't ut all the threads - just left 3-4 for the new knob. Good luck!

my friend told me he saw someone do this on the RX-8 forums, but left a small portion of the thread left.. well.. the end result was that the shift knob was wobbly and since he cut the stock shifter, the shift knob wouldnt even allow the car to get into gear because the knob was hitting the area around the shift boot.

how about a countersunk shift knob.. then you don't have to hack up your car.

This is how it looks when you thread it all the way and cut the same length from the top as you cut new thread.
All together about 12 mm.
I've kept the locking nut.
It is standard M10 thread.
You will need something like this:
